Bioinspired modular hierarchical light-weighted structures. Nature is a source of inspiration for sustainable and innovative solutions. Methodologies for development and manufacturing of light-weighted and high load bearing structures are gaining momentum due to their vast potential applications with local and global implications (e.g. reduced fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and raw material use). Inspired on natural processes of optimized tree growth and deep sea glassy microorganism’s structure-function relation, a translational process involving machine learning, hierarchical topological optimization algorithms has been implemented. The structures consist of modular light-weighted units that can be assembled into hierarchical structures by self-driven robots. This bioinspired platform finds a wide range of future applications from automotive, space, and architecture to tissue engineering.
